WPAFB staff plowing a nine-acre portion of HPSNL that was not expressing native vegetation, 1993. TNC volunteers subsequently hand-broadcasted locally collected seeds onto the black prairie soil.
After five years, the section that was plowed and planted had become a beautiful display of prairie vegetation native to the local area.
The restoration plan was a collaboration, but Nature Conservancy volunteers did much of the fieldwork, harvesting, cleaning, storing, and planting seed; cutting and pulling invasive species; and planting plugs of prairie plants into degraded sections.
In 1992 and 1993, the restoration partnership resolved to till and reseed a nine-acre section of the Huffman Prairie State Natural Landmark that was not expressing prairie vegetation, even after having been burned in early spring. Wright-Patterson staff plowed the black soil, and TNC volunteers hand-spread a diverse mix of locally collected forb, or flower, seeds mixed with grass seeds harvested with the combine. The seed was then lightly worked into the soil. Within five years, these plantings grew into an impressive display of prairie vegetation native to the Dayton area.
